Biography: Frances Middleton Cotton Walker was born on 9 May 1841 in Nehagh, the eldest daughter of clergyman John Cotton Walker, the rector of Ballinasloe. Her early life cannot be traced. In midlife, she began writing, publishing anonymously or under the pseudonym "Gabriel H. Harwood." In the 1890s, she resided in Dublin. She never married and died suddenly on 28 December in Bath. Her last novel Cloister to Court (1909) was published posthumously. Note: author identified since Casque and Cowl was reprinted in 1900 under the name "Frances M. Cotton Walker."
