Biography: Gwenddolen Mary Sydney Cairin Augusta Clarke, called Effie, was born in 1846 in Nairn, the daughter of prosperous farmer Augustus T. Clarke and his wife Charlotte Jones. She lived much of the first half of her life on the family estate Achareidh. In middle life, she wrote a novel Who Was She? (1879). By the turn of the century, she moved to London. Clarke never married and died on 9 May 1931 in London.
