Author: Lucy Toulmin Smith (1838–1911)

Alternate Name(s): Louis Sand (pseudonym)

Biography: Lucy Toulmin Smith was born on 21 November 1838 in Boston, Massachusetts, the daughter of lawyer Joshua Toulmin Smith. As a child, the family returned to England. At an early age, she assisted her father's literary efforts as an author and editor. Her brother married novelist L. T. Meade and the two worked side by side in the British Museum. Smith contributed to periodicals and wrote some fiction under the pseudonym "Louis Sand," though her later historical work was published under her legal name, notably her editon of the York miracle plays. Her later years were spent as the librarian at Manchester College, Oxford. She died on 18 December 1911 in Oxford. Interestingly, Meade was buried next to her sister in law a few years later. Note: her pseudonymous work was identified through the Curran Index.
