Author: Alexander Cosby Jackson (1845–1907)
Biography: Alexander Cosby Jackson was born on 19 March 1845 in Elstree, Hertfordshire, the son of army officer Robert H. S. Jackson and his wife Elizabeth. He was the grandson of rear admiral Sir Peter Halkett, baronet. He attended Shrewsbury School before joining the 23rd Royal Welsh Fusiliers in 1864. His army career was short-lived since he sold out two years later. He turned his hand to fiction, penning the novel His Fate (1873). In the preface, he called it his "brain-child"; the Athenaeum called it an "abortion." He attended Chichester College and was ordained in 1877. He served as curate or chaplain in Horsham, Bryngwyn, Malta, Semington, Melksham Union, and Genoa. In 1877, he married the Hon. Susan Frances Hotham, the sister of the 5th Baron Hotham, and the couple had several children. He died on 23 February 1907 in Rome.
