Biography: Julia Charlotte Maitland was born in 1808 or 1810 in Brompton, the daughter of Henry Barrett. In 1836, she married jurist James Thomas, a judge at Madras, as his second wife. She spent some time in India. After her husband died in 1840, she married clergyman Charles Maitland. The couple had at least two children. In addition to two other works, she wrote two novels for young readers. She died on 29 January 1864 in Stowe Provost near Shaftesbury.
