Author: Charles Edmund Maurice (1843–1927)

Biography: Charles Edmund Maurice was born in 1843 in Southwark, the son of clergyman and theologian John Frederick Denison Maurice (1805–1872). Maurice studied for the law but gave it up after the death of the father and his marriage to Emily Southwood Hill in 1872. A fifty-year resident of Hampstead, he threw himself into educational, political, and philanthropic work. In particular, he successfully advocated for the preservation of Hampstead Heath and other public spaces. He wrote poetry and history as well as some historical fiction. He died of heart failure on 4 January 1927 in Hampstead.
