Biography: Catherine Barter was born in 1818 near Oxford, the daughter of clergyman Charles Barter. She made several trips to South Africa in the 1850s, sometimes accompanying her brother Charles. For a time, she ran a native school in Zwaartkop. She returned to England in 1864 where she ran a school in Shipton-under-Wychwood. But missionary work drew her back to South Africa in the 1880s, settling in Wychwood, Natal. She died there on 27 July 1895. Based on her experience, she wrote a travel book Alone Among the Zulu (1866) and a juvenile novel Home in South Africa (1867).
