Author: Catharine Augusta Howell (1839–1922)

Alternate Name(s): Morris (married name)

Biography: Catharine Augusta Howell was born in 1839 in Bath, the daughter of surgeon John Warren Howell and his wife Elizabeth Augusta (née Sloper). Her accomplished father died early in her childhood in 1844 throwing the family into difficulties. Her mother became a schoolmistress and governess in London and Howell followed suit. Her two books, Pages of Child-Life (1859) and Pictures of Girl Life (1865), date from this period and seem based on her experiences. In 1864, she went out to India where she married army officer Montague Cholmeley Morris. The family, now including three children, returned to England in the 1880s. She died on 23 October 1922 in Plymouth.
