Author: Richard John Shields (1822–1897)

Biography: Richard John Shields was born in 1822 in Durham, the son of Richard and Eleanor Shields. He attended the University of Durham where he earned a B.A. (1844) and M.A. (1848) before entering the church. He was the longtime incumbant of Hornby, Lancashire. Shields found time to write one work of fiction, The Knights of the Red Cross (1861). He married twice and had two sons. He died on 14 August 1897 in Basingstoke.
