Biography: Eliza Anne Melville was born on 17 March 1829 in Brighton, the daughter of James Smallbone and Frances Barrow. She trained as an artist and became a professional painter of portraits and landscapes. Her best known painting was a portrait of Queen Victorian. She married fellow painter Alexander Melville and the couple had three daughters. The two surviving daughters also became painters. Inspired by one of her juvenile subjects, Melville wrote the single novel £2000 Reward (1871). She lived a long life, dying at age 90 on 24 July 1919 in Brentford.
