Author: John Davies Mereweather (1816–1896)
Biography: John Davies Mereweather was born in 1816 in Bristol, the son of John Mereweather and his wife Anna Maria. He attended Oxford University earning a B.A. (1843) before being ordained. He served briefly as a curate in Manchester before traveling to Australia on an emigrant ship. He recounts his trip and time in Australia in two memoirs, Life on Board an Emigrant Ship (1852) and Diary of a Working Clergyman in Australia and Tasmania (1859). On his return to Europe, he settled in Venice and served as the English chaplain from 1856–1887. While there, Mereweather wrote several nonfiction works, a verse drama, and the novel Semele (1867). He never married and died on 18 June 1896 in Venice.
