Biography: Eliza Sarah Francis Smith was born on 19 December 1788 in Cambridge, the daughter of Alderman Samuel Francis and his wife Elizabeth. She married William Smith of Pimlico and Petlands, Hampshire. During her married life, she translated A Picture of the Four Religions (1841) from the French as well as later writing two works of fiction as "Mrs. E. Smith." Beginning in 1842, she successfully applied to the Royal Literary Fund several times. She never remarried and died on 25 September 1868 in London. Despite her common name, her identity was confirmed when a review noted her father.
