Author: Eustace Wilberforce Jacob (1825–1871)
Biography: Eustace Wilberforce Jacob was born on 17 February 1825 in Crawley, the son of clergyman Philip Jacob, the rector of Crawley. For seven years he served as an officer in the 99th Regiment and sold out as captain in 1862. After a brief period in England, during which he co-wrote a collection of stories, he went out as a missionary to Natal where he was ordained deacon. His ardent labors under trying conditions won him the favor of his parishioners. He married Marianne Edda Fannin in 1869 and was ordained a priest the following year. However, disease of the throat and lung caused him to give up his mission and travel back to England for his health. He died on 9 July 1871 at his father's house in Crawley.
