Author: Edward Steere (1828–1882)

Biography: Edward Steere was born on 4 May 1828 in London, the son of barrister William Steere. He was educated at University College School and University College London (B.A. 1847, LL.B. 1848, LL.D. 1850) before being called to the bar. As a member of the Guild of St. Alban, he set up his own press to produce their monthly magazine. In 1856, he was ordained and held several livings, including rector of Little Steeping, Lincolnshire (1859–1872). However, in the 1860s, he made an extended visit to Central Africa and Zanzibar where he produced handbooks and grammars of the Swahili language. He later translated the new testament into Swahili and published a colletion of tales. In the 1870s, he went to Zanzibar permanently as a missionary. He died there on 28 August 1882.
