Biography: Margaret Richmond Cartmell was born on 17 November 1857 in Cambridge, the daughter of college master James Cartmell and his wife Frances Eliza Austen. As a young woman, she turned her hand to fiction writing two novels in a short period. But after this promising start, she appears to have set down her pen. She never married and moved to Kent later in life where she took a great interest in the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides. Cartmell died after a long period of indifferent health on 11 June 1926 in Barham.
