Biography: Ellen Clere was born on 11 September 1822 in Stockport, the daughter of John Vaughan and his wife Elizabeth Anne Lingard. In 1849, she married clergyman Henry Clere, later vicar of Tickenham, and the couple had eight children. During her married life, she wrote two novels as well as several books of religious nonfiction. In the 1880s, the family emigrated to New Zealand for her husband's health. Clere died on 23 October 1885 in New Plymouth, New Zealand.
