Biography: William Dawes was born on 14 March 1840 in North Hamlet, Kingsholm near Gloucester, the son of builder William Dawes. He trained as an architect and worked in a partnership in Manchester. Notably, he designed the Victoria buildings in Manchester about 1883. As an author, he wrote a series of comic works in the guise of "Elijer Goff." He died on 16 February 1897 in Manchester leaving a wife and several children.
