Author: Joshua Henry Kirby (1819–1877)
Biography: Joshua Henry Kirby was born on 9 March 1819 in Gibraltar, the third son of army officer Stephen Kirby and his wife Martha Fleming Ancrum. He joined the army in 1838 where he served with the 86th Regiment during the Indian Mutiny and with the 68th Regiment during the Tauranga campaign in New Zealand (including the defeat at Gate Pa). In 1866, he was sent to India as a brigadier general. While there, he wrote a novel Henry Ancrum (1872) based on his army experiences. Kirby died of fever on 30 June 1877 in Belgaum, India. He left a widow.
