Biography: Sir George Makgill was born on 24 December 1868 in Stirling, the son of army officer Sir John Makgill, 10th baronet and his wife Margaret Isabella Haldane. He was privately educated and lived in New Zealand where his father was stationed. In 1891, he married Frances Elizabeth Grant and the couple had four children. Under the pseudonym "Victor Waite" he wrote the novel Cross Trails (1898) and followed with another four over the next two decades. In 1906 he settled in Eye, Suffolk. During the First World War, he served as secretary to the British Empire Union, a right-wing propagandist organization. Following the war, he continued to engage in such work. Makgill died on 16 October 1926.
