Author: Ellen Barker (1859–1923)
Biography: Ellen Caroline Barker was born on 31 August 1859 in Ferozepore, India, the eldest daughter of army clerk William Barker and his wife Mary Jane Spencer. The family returned to England where they settled in Liverpool by 1866. Barker trained as a teacher, passing examinations by the College of Preceptors (she would list "M.C.P." after her name). Together with her sisters and cousin, she lived in Everton where she worked as a school board teacher of domestic science. She attemped fiction with the novel Graäb (1885) set in India, but the poor reviews likely discouraged her. She never married and died on 6 December 1923 in Liverpool.
