Biography: Charlotte Evans was born on 21 September 1841 near Manchester, the daughter of coal merchant James Lees and his wife Sophia Ball. In the 1860s, she emigrated to Otago, New Zealand where she married Eyre Frederick Fitzgeorge Evans in 1868. As a wife, she wrote two novels of New Zealand life, Over the Hills, and Far Away (1874) and A Strange Friendship (1874). She died a week after giving birth to her twelfth child on 22 July 1882 in Otago.
