Author: Amy Hurlston (1864–1949)
Biography: Amy Hurlston was born on 28 December 1864 in Coventry, the daughter of watchmaker Alfred Hurlston and his wife Emma Elizabeth Deacon. She lived the first thirty years of her life with her parents and as a young woman began contributing to newspapers. She made enough in journalism to help relieve her father's bankruptcy in 1892. Hurlston took an interest in politics, serving on the local board of guardians and giving speeches in favor of women's rights. In addition to serial fiction, she wrote the novel Played Out and Lost (1885). In 1897, she sued a man for breach of promise and won £1,050 in damages. Late in life, in 1909, she married prominent surgeon William Wright Wilson (as his third wife). She spent the last thirty years of her life as a widow in West Malvern where she died on 23 January 1949.
