Author: Mary Emma Hattersley (1853–1897)

Biography: Mary Emma Hattersley was born in 1853 in Aswarby, Lincolnshire, the only child of Amran Hattersley, the groom for the vicar of Aswarby. Despite her humble origins, she trained as a teacher. In addition to her duties, she wrote a long poem Nehemiah (1877) and a novel Norstone (1879). She never married and lived with her parents. Late in life, they moved to Liddington where she died on 29 April 1897.
