Biography: Lalla McDowell was born on 30 November 1825 in Dublin, the daughter of army officer George Oliver Bingham and his wife Lalla Marcella Smith. Her father died when she was a year old and her mother subsequently remarried twice before her death in 1842. In 1852, she married Richard Brown Wolseley and the couple had one child. After her husband's death, she married again to Liverpool merchant Edward McDowell and the couple had three children. During her married life, she wrote two novels, The Earl of Effingham (1877) and How We Learned to Help Ourselves (1877). Her second husband died in 1879 and it appears she moved back to Dublin. She never remarried and died on 21 March 1899 in Dublin.
