Biography: Herbert Adams was born in 1874 in London, the son of William Adams and his wife Clara Simkin. He trained and worked as a surveyor before turning full-time to literary work. Early in life, he wrote a novel A Virtue of Necessity (1899) but it was several years before he wrote another, becoming a prolific author of nearly fifty mystery novels in the twentieth century. In 1900, he married Jessie Louise Cooper and the couple had three sons. He died on 24 February 1958 in Bournemouth.
