Biography: Ada Louise Martin was born in 1858 near Manchester (some sources say Boston), the daughter of civil servant William Wilsey Martin. From an early age she wrote and published poetry in magazines and newspapers. She also took a philanthropic interest in workers and she is best known for her long series of dramatic poems The Gordon League Ballads written under the pseuonym "Jim's wife." In 1886, she married Oxford tutor and sports administrator Clement Nugent Jackson (in fact, Martin's sister married her husband's brother). The marriage was childless. During her married life, Martin wrote a single novel. By the time of her death, she was well known as a reciter of her own verse and a beloved philanthropist. Martin died on 7 May 1935 at her sister's house in Bexhill-on-Sea.
