Biography: Elizabeth Daniel was born in 1823 in Oxfordshire, the illegitimate daughter of George Spencer-Churchill (1766–1840), the fifth Duke of Marlborough, and his mistress Matilda Glover (1802–1876). In 1842, she married journalist and novelist Robert Mackenzie Daniel and the couple had two children. After he became incapacitated by mental illness and died, she turned to fiction for support, eventually producing two dozen novels. In addition, she successfully applied to the Royal Literary Fund twice. She remarried in 1849 to merchant marine mate Lionel Campbell Goldsmid. She died on 15 January 1878 in Balham.
